Child of John Hemphill Grumbles and Mariam Rebecca Brooking-Grumbles. The couple had married in Llano County, Texas, in 1882, and like many residents of that part of Texas, had joined a wagon train to New Mexico in 1887 after newspaper articles described a New Mexico paradise filled with gold. Upon arrival prospectors found little gold and difficult living conditions, and instead acclimated to farming and ranching lifestyles. His father, John, died on March 10, 1896, when Walter was 9 years old. There were several families that had followed the wagon train and inter-married, comprising much of the Carrizozo population. Between Collier, Bragg, Gallacher, Grumbles, Brooking, Cleghorn, Mills and McDaniel families — practically everyone in Carrizozo was a cousin or somehow related by marriage
