SOUTHWESTERN HOTEL

The first big clue it’s location is the ad above: White Oaks Ave and Placer St., but we still have a problem to which of the 4 corners. However, The Northwest side of White Oaks Ave we have the Exchange Bank built in 1893 and the Northeast side the Little Casino Saloon which was previously the Exchange Cattle Saloon, and before that the Pioneer Saloon in 1882. So it’s impossible for the Hotel to be on the Northern side of the Ave.

Dealing with the South side only takes us down to 2 possible locations. The Southwest and Southeast corner. Our first clue I found recently was this one.

It places the Southwestern Hotel in the Southeast Corner of White Oaks Ave and Placer St. Th Southwestern Hotel was located on the West end of White Oaks Ave & Placer St.   Ownership changes of the Southwestern Hotel listed below.

  • Aug 27, 1887, “Saturday last, Oscar Dyer, his mother, sister and brother, rolled into town,  and on Monday they had took charge of the Southwestern Hotel, Jno, A. Brothers retiring…”
  • Feb, 1889, “H. C. Reil, has taken charge of the Southwestern Hotel. . . .” 
  • Jan 31, 1895, “The  Southwestern Hotel will change hands tomorrow, Tom Wing, the Chinaman who has for some  time presided over the culinary department taking entire charge of the dining room and kitchen. Mrs Brothers will have charge of the rooms. . . The name will be changed to the Palace  Hotel.
  • August 01, 1895, “Mrs.. M. A. Brothers has retired from the management of the  Palace Hotel, leasing to C.L. Wilson . . . Mr. W. assumes charge of the Palace Hotel today,  changing the name of this well known hostelry to the Wilson house. . .”
