PLOT Row Q – Northside

He was born in St. Clare Co., Ill on the 5 March 1842 and died on the 26 January 1901 at Texas Park, Lincoln Co., N.M. He moved to Texas with his parents at the age of 12 years. According to the 1870 census, he was living in Gillespie Co., Texas, married and a “cattle raiser”. On 25 December 1867, he married Cloe Irena Elizabeth Fairchild in Gillespie Co., Texas(Bk 2 p. 81). The ceremony was performed by Rev. Elijah Lacey, father of the groom, witnesses were William Alexander and Joseph McDonald. She was the daughter of Amos Fairchild and Lucretia Jane McDonald. The Fairchilds came from Illinois by ox teams and wagon, with 10 yoke of oxen. Mr. Fairchild was a woodworker and he had enough lumber dressed out to make three wagons and brought it along to Texas. He was hung by Col. James Duff and his bushwhackers during the Civil War. They rounded up Union sympathizers in Texas and summarily executed them. Amos has refused to serve in the Southern Army, and was fleeing to Mexico when he was captured and hung. In 1868, Lucretia married William Lewis Chesser, widower. We will present more on the Chesser family in the Thomas Monroe Lacey section.

Joshua served in the Union forces during the Civil War, and received a gunshot wound which invalided him to the extent that he received a pension. The application document shows that he enlisted or enrolled, Oct.28, 1862 in Co. A, 1st Regt. of Texas Cavalry Volunteers, commanded by John L. Haynes, and was honorably discharged at San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas, Oct. 31, 1865. He is described as follows: age 15 years, 5’8″ tall, sandy complexion and sandy hair, with blue eyes. It states that he was wounded by a gunshot through his right side, in Louisiana, on or about the first part of October, 1863, dated Jan. 8, 1876. He stated his occupation at time of enlistment as a “drover”, an at the time of the filing of the application as a farmer, Witnesses to the document were William Jackson Locke and Lewis Madison Lacey, who served in the same regiment.
