Walking through the Ventura Ca. Cemetery one comes across a weathered headstone with a corroded brass plaque reading: John H Canning 1863-1938, Hilda 1866-1943

The visitor usually just continues on paying no real attention. In this case. let’s just dig a bit deeper and in doing so bring back the old days in White Oaks and honor these two now resting quietly in obscurity. John was born in July 1863 or 1864 in Canada, Hilda in 1867 in Ohio. Their first child Francis R was born in Nevada in April 1891. Daughter Helen A born Aug 1893 in New Mexico. The Nov 24 1911 Carrizozo Outlook states he came to White Oaks in 1886 and sold out his holdings and left for California in 1911.

The 1900 census finds the Canning family living in their owned home in White Oaks. John was a cashier at the Exchange Bank. Going through the newspapers of the period we find hundreds of references to the Honorable John H Canning . He, along with George Ulrich and William McDonald owned the Carrizozo Trading Company ,John was the Treasurer. John was an accomplished whist card player and had many card parties.  He was the Lincoln County treasurer, a member of the Republican State Committee. A member of the Constitutional Committee prior to Statehood. On the White Oaks school board, Elected President of the First National Bank of Alamogordo,

Served as a pall bearer at Mrs Padens funeral in 1911 along with Hewitt,  both Mayers ,A C Wingfield,  and Charles Spence,.

The July 7 1916 Carrizozo paper announced Canning came to town on a visit and all hoped he would come back and go into business. He never did 1920 finds John and Hilda living in Oxnard Ca ,he operating a shoe merchandising company . And here they lie. The authors respectfully bring their history out of the trash bin of history and honor a long and successful life.
