He was making a well, on the East side of White Oaks, and had employed a helper to assist him. Charley had fired an unsuccessful shot and went down the ladder much later after the smoke had subsided after down in the hole, he cried to be hoisted out fast, and moments later he fell to the bottom of the well. He was later hauled up top the surface, but had broken his neck.
